22 Mile Course (35k)

Saturday, August 25, 2018 • 7:00am Start At Oak Street Plaza (Base of the Gondola)

The 22 miler is held primarily on the Telluride Ski Area with a detour into the Alta Lakes area and finishes down Bear Creek Preserve. The course will cover a variety of terrain that includes jeep roads, forested single track, a high ridge traverse across the top of Gold Hill and a steep loose climb to the top of Palmyra Peak (13,300 ft). With a little bit of everything this is a great mountain running challenge for those not wanting to tackle the 38 miler.

You should know... there are sections of this course that are extremely technical, steep and loose. This is a MOUNTAIN RUN- participants will be running to altitudes of over 13,000 ft on exposed ridgelines and steep, rocky summits. The trails are extremely rocky and at times there are no trails at all. There are many sections of this course that will be exposed to falls, potential rockfall and hazardous weather. There will be safety personnel along sections of the route monitoring these hazards but all participants should be responsible for their own safety. THIS IS NOT AN EVENT FOR BEGINNERS.

*Cut-off times will be strictly enforced for the safety of the runners.

Drop Bags:

There will be no drop bags for the 22 mile race.

Packet Pick up:

Packet pick up will take place Friday, Aug 24th, from 4:00pm to 7:30pm at the Oak Street Plaza (base of the Gondola). If you absolutely can't make it on Friday you can pick up your bib at the racer check in starting one hour before your race.

Spectating:

We encourage spectators to cheer on the runners along the course. There is no vehicle access to the public along the 22 mile course so spectators will need to hike. The gondola is free to the public and San Sophia Station is the easiest access to start a hike. Bear Creek is also a beautiful hike that starts from the end of Pine Street and you will be able to cheer on the runners in the final miles of the race.

*We ask that spectators do not hike to the top of Palmyra Peak. The terrain is steep and loose and there is limited space for the runners and our safety personnel. Thanks.

Course Markings:

The course will be well marked with flagging tape, flags and at some intersections, directional signs. The race organizers will do everything they can to have the course well marked for race participants the day of the event. Runners must follow trail markings and not cut switchbacks. Please be sure to understand the course! This is super important- Despite all our efforts to mark the course really well, some of our route marking have gone missing every year. We will be posting a more detailed route description and GPS track later this summer after the snow has melted.

Route Description:

The 22 Mile course starts and ends at the Oak Street Plaza in Telluride (base of the Gondola).

Section 1- Telluride to Gold Hill 1: Leave Oak Street Plaza and head south across the bridge and onto the Ski Area. Follow Telluride Trail up for 1 mile until you have the option to continue straight on Easy Out Road. After .3 miles, Easy Out Road will take a right turn, follow this up for 1 mile to See Forever Ridge. If you miss this turn you will soon arrive at the base of Lift 9. Continue on the See Forever Trail (road), off and on the ridge, for 1.8 miles to the Gold Hill Aid Station- mile 4.2.

Section 2- Gold Hill to Prospect: *Note- This section of the course has steep and loose off-trail travel to 13,300ft. If you are uncomfortable with this terrain, please go slow and take your time... or turn around. From the Gold Hill 1 Aid Station continue up the road, past the top of Lift 15, for 1 mile to the sign labeled High Traverse. From the sign, head down and right on a loose single track contouring the mountain into Prospect Basin. Continue down the basin until it is possible to end run the bottom of the rock glacier and head up the other side to gain the steep grassy hillside of Palmyra Peak. Switchback up steep grass until it gains the ridge, continue up the ridge. From this point on Palmyra Peak there will be an up route and a down route for safety- the up route will be left and follows the ridge proper. Carefully follow the loose ridge to the summit. From the summit of Palmyra, follow the down track through steep, loose scree to the grassy slopes below leading to the Prospect Aid Station- mile 7.5

Section 3- Prospect to Gold Hill 2: From the Prospect Aid Station run down the road for .4 miles to the left turn for Bald Mountain. Cross the large grassy area to the south of Bald Mountain and continue for another .4 miles down a single track trail to a two track road in the Alta Lakes area. Turn right and follow this two track for .5 miles until you reach the intersection with Boomerang Rd, turn right. Run Boomerang Rd. for 1.6 mile, staying right at all intersections. Turn right and follow the Prospect Trail (single track) that stays just right of Prospect Rd for .5 miles. When you reach the next road crossing, turn left down the road and take the next right turn 50 yards later. *Note- If you continue straight on the single track at this road crossing it will continue uphill on Prospect Loop- do not go this way. Continue on Prospect Trail, slightly downhill, passing between the top of Lift 10 and the bottom of Lift 11. In .5 miles take a hard right turn into the woods. Follow Prospect Trail for 2.6 miles of contouring single track to the intersection with the road on the Boomerang ski run. Turn right and follow this road up. *Note- the 13-mile course continues straight on Prospect Trail at this intersection, do not go this way. In 100 yards, turn right at the pond on Basin Trail Rd for 1.4 mile to the top of Lift 5 and the entrance of Prospect Bowl. Turn up and left on Woozly's Way for a steep .5 miles to See Forever Trail. Turn right and follow See Forever for another .5 miles up to Gold Hill 2 Aid Station- mile 15.5

Section 4- Gold Hill 2 to Telluride: From the Gold Hill Aid Station 2 take an immediate left onto the contouring single track (Wasatch Connection Trail) that passes underneath Chairlift 15. Follow the Wasatch Connection Trail down for 3.6 miles to the intersection of Bear Creek Trail. Turn left and follow Bear Creek Trail down 1.9 miles before turning left on Camel's Garden Trail. If you miss this turn and continue straight you with soon end up on town, turn around and go back. Follow Camel's Garden up and left for .4 miles, turn down and right on a short single track to Telluride Trail. Turn right on Telluride Trail and follow it down for 100 yards, turn right to the finish line at Oak Street Plaza. DONE! EAT FOOD! DRINK BEER!
